How much cash should you have by 40?
You may be starting to think about your retirement goals more seriously. By age 40, you should have saved a little over $185,000 if you're earning an average salary and follow the general guideline that you should have saved about three times your salary by that time.
While it certainly depends on your situation, experts have general guidelines on what you need to have saved at each stage of your life. For example, experts at Fidelity Investments recommend that you save: At least one times your salary by your 30th birthday. Three times your salary by your 40th birthday.
How much money should you have saved for retirement by age 40? Generally speaking, most financial professionals will tell you that by age 40 you should have at least three times your annual salary saved. Keep in mind that for married couples you should have three times your combined household income.

Increase your retirement savings
According to financial experts, you should have roughly three times your yearly salary in savings by the time you reach age 40. If you haven't reached this goal, don't worry, there's still plenty of time to start contributing.
Having $20,000 in a savings account is a good starting point if you want to create a sizable emergency fund. When the occasional rainy day comes along, you'll be financially prepared for it. Of course, $20,000 may only go so far if you find yourself in an extreme situation.
Data shows that the average 40-something has $77,400 in retirement savings. If you're 40 with $40,000, you're by no means doomed, but you may want to ramp up your contributions as much as you can. It's also important to invest your savings, so your money is able to grow over time.

What net worth is considered rich?
While having a net worth of about $2.2 million is seen as the benchmark for being rich in America, it's essential to remember that wealth is a subjective concept. Healthy financial habits and personal perspectives on money are crucial in defining and achieving wealth.
The basics. If you retire at 55, and the average life expectancy is around 87, then 300K will need to last you 30+ years. If it's your only source of retirement income, until the state pension kicks in at around 67/68, then you are going to have to budget hard to make it last.
If you're looking for a ballpark figure, Taylor Kovar, certified financial planner and CEO of Kovar Wealth Management says, “By age 30, a good rule of thumb is to aim to have saved the equivalent of your annual salary. Let's say you're earning $50,000 a year. By 30, it would be beneficial to have $50,000 saved.
Social Security offers a monthly benefit check to many kinds of recipients. As of December 2023, the average check is $1,767.03, according to the Social Security Administration – but that amount can differ drastically depending on the type of recipient. In fact, retirees typically make more than the overall average.
It may be possible to retire at 45 years of age, but it depends on a variety of factors. If you have $500,000 in savings, then according to the 4% rule, you will have access to roughly $20,000 per year for 30 years. Retiring early will affect the amount of your Social Security benefit.
As you can see, the average savings by 40 is higher than $48,000 but likely lower than $148,000. However, it's worth noting that just because that's the average, that amount may not be what you might want to consider having saved.
“Household formation costs are very expensive, college is very expensive – everything costs more. I have a lot of empathy for people who are just starting out.” That said, the typical age of financial independence should be between 20-23 years old, according to a Bankrate survey.

Gaines reiterates that even most high-yield savings accounts lose value to inflation over time. “More than two months' worth of living expenses in a savings account is too much given the ability to earn around 5% from easily accessible money market accounts that should not fluctuate in price.”
How much should I realistically have in savings?
Rule of thumb? Aim to have three to six months' worth of expenses set aside. To figure out how much you should have saved for emergencies, simply multiply the amount of money you spend each month on expenses by either three or six months to get your target goal amount.
“In today's times, $50,000 should really be looked at as an emergency fund, rather than something to spend on improving one standard of living,” Jania added. “Further, because inflation is still rampant, if one chooses to increase their standard of living, the cost of that will likely go up even more over time.”
Saving $1,500 per month may be a good amount if it's feasible. In general, save as much as you can to reach your goals, whether that's $50 or $1,500. You could speak with a certified financial planner to help develop a plan for your finances if you aren't sure how much money to save regularly.
A $40,000 salary may be sufficient for an individual in a low-cost area, but it may not be enough for a family to live comfortably in most parts of the US. Rising inflation has made it more challenging to live on a $40,000 salary, but it still exceeds the poverty threshold for families.
If you delay taking your benefits from your full retirement age up to age 70, your benefit amount will increase. If you start receiving benefits early, your benefits are reduced a small percent for each month before your full retirement age.
